First attempt 120kg

i came out feeling overly confident and did my usual strut round the platform i knew it was going to be a nice n easy opener still got a bit nervous when i went out for it but everybody does on their first snatch, pull was good and high caught it in a semi-power snatch position stood nice and easy waited for the buzzer 3 white lights. great success this put me in the lead on the snatch by 30kg.

Second Attempt 125kg

like the last time i came out really confident almost not taking it as seriously as you should do for a equal comp PB attempt. went to the bar sorted grip etc started the pull it felt stable then as i drove my hips in i caught my "penis" and nearly ripped it off.. this took me off balance and i lost the bar behind then remained on the platform for about 10 seconds feeling immense pain...

Third Attempt 125kg

because of my previous accident i was a lot more weary and sort of wanted to change my grip but you can't do that at this stage... I got to the bar and it occurred to me that 120 was the current Fulda cup 77 snatch record and i'de only equaled it so i needed it for the record! so i got a bit more aggressive and i wasn't gonna drop it for anything, the pull was fast and i got it really high but i clipped my "privates" again in the exact same place this winded me i sat deep into the snatch my arse nearly touched the floor but i was determined not to fail it stood up, held it, buzzer went, I dropped it and walked away happy and the pain disappeared!

(me and my coach misjudged how long i had left and the bar was loaded wrong in the warm up i wanted 147 so i could go out on 152 but i ran out of time so i had to go out on 150 after only a 140 warm up.. (i never take that jump)

First Attempt 150kg

with the mishap in the warm up i wasn't confident and the time was going down i only had 25 seconds on the clock so i rushed my "bar approach" short pulled it racked it in the fullsquat position dodgy fell out in front FAIL!

Second Attempt 150kg

because i had just felt it i knew that this time i'de smash it as the fail was classed in my head as a warm up i pulled it high stood out really easy popped the jerk no problem buzzer went and then i knew i'de won the comp... by a "margin"

Third attempt 157kg

this was a triple wammy attempt.. it was a fulda cup record a British record and if i got it, it was a fulda and British record total. the current record was 156kg for both british and fulda.
Came out abit nervous but knew what it was gonna feel like (the 156kg i did 2 weeks earlier taught me a few lessons about what these "biscuits" can do) i approached the bar a lot more aggressive than usual knowing that it would be won/lost in the pull pulled with everything got it nice and high it landed on me hard i caught it dead stood up it was a grinder on the way up sorted my hands out jerked it had it in a good position but the bar went slightly forward (cheeky) so i had to chance it for 4 steps held it above head heard the buzzer go, 3 white lights!

GOLD - England - 282kg total

Result - Shaun Clegg breaks another British record 156kg clean and jerk at 75kg bodyweight

About Shaun

Shaun has followed in the foot-steps of big brother Mark and went into weightlifting at a very early age. Shaun has set many British records and in his early teens set the U14’s snatch at 95kg at a body weight of 69kg. Since those early days, Shaun has gone from strength to strength; although he did have some time out from lifting and tried his hand a strongman. However, Shaun’s passion for weightlifting came back and in April 2010 at The British Junior Championships held at Lillishal, Shaun was awarded best lifter for 120kg snatch and 140 clean & jerk a great result for someone who had had a break.

British Junior Weightlifting Championships 2011

Shaun, his writeup about his experience

The day before the competition me and my coach for the comp and Training partner (David Oakes) went up to Dave's caravan in Rhyl - Wales to have a day or R & R before the competition in Holyhead (about an hour away in the car as apposed to 3 hours from Manchester when we got there we just chilled out for the full day had a really rubbish sirloin steak for £5.95 but i guess you get what you pay for! i asked for rare and it was at best "well done" but i'm not a food critic, so my opinion doesn't count! It was made up by though however by a kebab we had later that night!

Day of the comp

Woke up that morning at about 7:30 we was leaving at 8am to get there for 9am weigh in was in at 11am for me but i wanted to see the lighter lads (56kg and 62kg) lift and i also had a good friend in the woman's class who i was looking forward to watching, got there slightly later than planned but i dn't miss anything important, gave Steve Cannon (BWLA Boss) my form for the Olympics so now i've covered my back and can definitely do the Olympics providing i hit the totals..

I watched some good lifting, saw Hannah Powell (48kg woman) break 5 British Records and this got me pumped because i was looking for records myself on the day.

In The Warm Up Area

I Weighed in at 75.1kg

I was feeling good in the "Warm Up Area". Sam Hayer (A Top Class British Coach) was in there with one of his lads and he gave me a tip when i was snatching which really worked for me and i was feeling good, got up to about 80kg on the snatch and i had a couple of wobbly ones and Dave Oakes said "Look mate stop thinking about it you know how to snatch go up to the bar don't think about it and just do it" and i did and something clicked into place and i was feeling really good my line was good etc, then Gareth Evans (Commonwealth Games 2010 Athlete) a really good mate walked into the warm up and was helping Dave coach me and he was really encouraging and as a team (Dave and Gaz) it reminded me a lot of Mark Clegg and Kev Stewart (both ex-coaches and they were the guys who got me started in weightlifting and taught me everything i know) I was meant to be coming out light roughly 112kg kind of area but in the warm up i did a really good 110kg snatch and then an even better 115kg snatch so i put up my opener by 5kg! (which is quite a large increase)

1st Attempt Snatch 117kg

Came out really confident as i just did a 115kg snatch easy in the warm up nice and casual walking about the platform waited for the 30 second buzzer and then approached the bar centered it at the back of the platform pull was easy drove hips in got underneath really easy stood up (it was easier than the 115!) blew a kiss to the crowd n walked off happy.

2nd Attempt Snatch 122kg

After the 117 i knew this was going to be fine again nice and confident walked past then towards the bar as i always do then approached the bar positioned it got myself set, started to pull it felt really light massive hip drive got the bar really high punched hard underneath and stood up smiling nodded at the center ref and walked away happy with how easy it was 3 white lights.

3rd Attempt Snatch 129kg

I said 126kg for the final attempt as it would of been a Personal Best in competition but then Gaz said "lets go for the record you can do it mate its all been easy!!" so i said "Alright fuck it, lets do it man" and so i came out the bar looked scary 2 red a side with the collers and little 2's on the end, i knew it was gonna be heavy and this was a big PB attempt it was also a British under 20 and under 23 record ! i approached the bar same as before and a little thing in my head said "you can do this mate..." i set myself pulled it, it didn't feel to bad off the floor it was coming up in the perfect position got my hips in pulled it really high dropped underneath Punched it out as hard as i could i had it in the bag and then i let my shoulders relax i was shocked it was where it was and then my left elbow buckled and i lost it behind i was so happy with the attempt i was even bothered that i failed it walked away with a smile!

In The Warm Up Area

I was still really pumped after that snatch attempt Dave told me to calm down because that was only the 1st half and now i've got to concentrate on a big Clean and Jerk everything in the warm up felt good, got up to around the 120kg mark and it was feeling fine i did abit of a dodgy 130kg clean and jerk landed it a bit dodgy so i just remembered what Dave said earlier and just relaxed and not to think about it. 135 easy 140 easy 145 the jerk was a bit shite, if anything this helped me cause when i was about to go onto the Platform i knew exactly what i had to do with the Jerk to make it right.

1st Attempt Clean & Jerk 148kg

After the rubbish 145 in the warm up i knew i had to give this some extra effort walked up to the bar poulled it it felt really light racked it in stood up with it easily and then popped the jerk i punched extra hard almost too hard but it was fine good lift walked off casual i knew at this point i'd won the competition which is always nice.

2nd Attempt Clean & Jerk 152kg

The 148kg was easy so i knew this was going to be fine too as i weighed in at 75.1 so it was over double bodyweight, i enjoy doing that... came out pull was light got under nice and easy sat into the clean then drove up as hard as i could at the top of the clean i knew the jerk was going to be easy popped the jerk it was far better than the 148 atempt. Gave the crowd a nod, walked off please knowing i'd already done a PB total for this year.

3rd Attempt Clean & Jerk 156kg

this again was a British record attempt for under 20 and under 23 got to the bar knowing i'de have to give this some i wanted to catch the bounce s i could get out of the clean really easy so i could do an easy jerk. I've got these new weightlifting boots Adistar ones only been training in them 3 weeks they are good boots especially for getting the bar high on the pull. I started the clean it felt light and i thought as i was doing it "I'm gonna smash this!!!" caught the bounce was standing up easy but the i went onto my toes on my left side and i lost my footing, right knee touched the floor and i had to leave it.. i was dissapointed because i knew i could of done it easily!!!!! ah well..

274kg total
1st Place
Best lifter award.

Good day out and an even better night out with the lads to celebrate..

I've got the Northern seniors on the 14th may and i'm hoping for good weights.

Tri-Nations 2011

Shaun, his write up for the Tri-Nations 2011

England V Norway V Sweden

i weighed in at a modest 74.48kg second lightest guy was 88.64kg the norwegian my main competitor on the total weighed 93.88kg the way the Tri-Nations works is its Round robin, PowerLifting style round system whatever you want to call it usually in Olympic Weightlifting its Rise of the bar which means say if i started 117 and another guy was starting 125 and i went 117 then 120 i'de do more 120 first and if i went 126 he would go Rise of the bar What it say on the tin basically!

Me and England Coach for this comp had worked together in the past and it didnt go well we had arguements anyways we discussed at the beginning the first attempt is his the second attempt is a negotiation and the 3rd attempt is mine i could put on a World Record if i liked (im nowhere near this standard)

However!

113kg Came out like i own the show just walking about nice an controlled went to the bar pulled it out on the middle of the platform i like to stand at the back just incase i go for a walk forward, strong pick up felt really light huge pull got underneathe stood up fine took a couple of steps to control it waited for down signal 3 white lights Good first attempt

117kg again came out really cofident knew i was going to get it walked up to bar again pulled it to back of platform pulled it came abit forward which was concerning got a nice big pull on it sat in with it above head at the bottom sat for 2 seconds stood up no probs waited for the buzzer, down good lift

coach for third attempt was saying what would you like? 120 121? i said "No, 125 please mate, this ones mine" and to be fair to him he said "okay i'm a man of my word"

125kg came out hungry for this lift first time i'de ever attempted it in competition and really wanted it (meawhile my norwegian rival had just failed 122kg snatch and finished on 117kg) i came out really cofident almost cocky kept quite no screaming or anything just if you like in the metaphorical zone pulled it back to back of the platform same as the others waited for 30 second buzzer took the weight from the floor i wont lie this felt heavy got a nice big pull on it got it behinde my head landed beautifully stood up with a slight walk and was absolutely estatic with the lift put it down n shouted "Who's The Daddy!!?" Glen ross style (arrogant Yes worth it Definately!)

120/1
130/1
135/1
140/1

143kg came out for this knowing it would be easy the pull felt light but i caught it dead this took me by surprise stood up easy enough and jerked it fine (this lift won me the sinclair for the competition at this point i knew i had won gold but i wanted to win the total too)

norway started 147 got it easy

148kg came out really confident wanting this one to fly really well weight off the floor felt better than 143 caught it dead AGAIN! but stood up fine the jerk was just basica rehersal good lift

norway went 152 got it

155kg wanted this for the 280kg total came out for it slightly nervous but wanting it pull off the floor was really hard nearly stopped dead underneathe stood up strong was really dizzy at the top took a few deep breathes was starting to wake up went for the jerk caught it okay but then locked it out a couple of times on each arm knowing it was a fail floored it .. would of been lovely to get it!!! but this has set me up nicely for a good year and there's talks of 300+ totals before end of this year.

norway missed 157kg by pressout

England Gold 273 total sinclair 349.98
Norway Silver 269 total sinclair 315ish
Sweden Bronze 255 total sinclair 305ish

good comp i would of come third in the seniors

good things to come hopefully.

With his sights firmly set on Gold for the London Olympics 2012. Shaun has also worked with top level athletes and helped his Dad and other brother Steven with a fitness masterclass.

A Selection of Shaun Clegg Youtube Vids

The significance of that snatch is it was my last British under 14 record as a 13 year old and it was also my first British schools championship, it was points based and you needed every lift to win (6 attempts) and all six needed to be successful so although i lifted the most weight i came second due to me missing my last clean and jerk (100kg)

The reason that particular video is important is because it was 2.5kg (5lbs) over my actual bodyweight i'm 1 of about 5 that can do that in Britain (bodyweight dumbbell clean and press) you have to be very explosive with that lift...  and lucky.

That video is still to this day my PB (personal best) and it was in preparation for the Commonwealth games in Delhi that unfortunately i didn't get the chance to lift in due to a poor performance in the British Senior Champs in June.

This video was my first international as a youngster this was before the British under 13 championships (vid 1) it was a under 14 competition and i was up against the Best both Austria and Germany had to offer and some how won. it was my first international win and to this day one of the most significant.

When i was 14 (6 months after the Fulda cup) i got glandular fever and i was out of lifting and pretty much anything else for 18 months i lost in total about 12kg i went from weighing 67kg and was as low as 55kg at my worst. When i was 16 i came in the gym for the first time in 18 months lifted a few bars but didn't want to snatch or clean and jerk for a while because it made me so ill so i went into power lifting for 6 months then went on to strongman and this was my first (and last) strongman competition held at Olympic Sports Gym in September 2009.

The reason why it was so important to me is because that day i was only meant to be going light and weightlifting is the kind of sport where this kind of madness happens i wasn't even particularly ready for the competition but ended up taking my Brothers only remaining British record that was held for 12 years.. i hope i can hold mine for 12 years also and one of the Clegg's son's will come and take it off me!

The significance of this lift is that it was my first Double bodyweight (i weighed 75.7) clean and jerk and at the time it was a PB of 5kg so was a very happy boy with that!
